The Allegory of Juhi's Sustenance and Spiritual Certainty in Sanai's Hadiqat

In Section 45 of the Hadiqat al-Haqiqah, Sanai uses the humorous anecdote of Juhi to critique religious sectarianism and the corrupting nature of material wealth. When asked about his allegiance to the caliphs Ali and Umar, Juhi explains that his constant anxiety over securing his morning meal leaves no room in his heart for factional love or hatred. Sanai elevates this story into a spiritual lesson, asserting that preoccupation with physical satiety and worldly wealth destroys spiritual certainty. The wealthy, 'sated' individual ultimately suffers from a starved faith, demonstrating that excessive material consumption isolates a person from spiritual truth.
