In this section of Attar's Mosibat Nameh, Sultan Mahmud asks Ayaz whether he or the Sultan is more beautiful. Ayaz claims that he is more beautiful, and when the Sultan asks for a mirror to verify, Ayaz declines, stating that physical mirrors are often crooked. Instead, he explains that their beauty is mutual and relational: Ayaz's beauty exists because he has a king as a lover, while the Sultan's beauty is manifest in having a beloved like Ayaz. This narrative serves as a Sufi allegory illustrating that divine beauty and love are relational, where the lover and the beloved serve as mirrors to reflect one another's true essence.
