Section 10 - The Tale and the Parable

Original content

English translation

One morning Ayaz came to the Sultan, His goodness boundless and his charm beyond measure. He had cast a hundred curls around his moon-like face, Every curl had cast down a hundred kings. The King constantly kept his face turned to his, His eyebrow was a closer chamberlain. The King was dazzled by his black eyes, The moon was dim compared to his beauty. Both his ruby lips were the key to difficulties, One like the water of Kawthar, the other the water of life. The sun of his face, out of its goodness, Truly struck the King's eyes powerfully. He said, "Behold, O you who brighten my eyes, Are you more beautiful than me, or am I than you?" He said, "I am more beautiful, O sovereign." His King said, "Go, bring a mirror." He said, "A mirror often reflects awry, A crooked judgment is never valid." He said, "How shall we judge this beauty?" He said, "Ask the condition from the mirror of the heart. The judgment of the heart increases the soul of the seers, Whatever the heart says, one cannot add to it." The King told him, "Ask your own heart, Whether I am more in beauty than you, or you." When a moment passed, then Ayaz Said, "I am more beautiful, O Truth-recognizer." The King said, "O desire of every restless one, What is this your heart says? Bring proof." He said, "However much I, before the King, Look into every joint and limb of mine, I see nothing but the Sultan constantly, I do not see a single atom of myself at all. Since I have entirely become the victorious King, Inevitably, without doubt, I have become more beautiful. In beauty, your work is something else, In the end, Mahmud is more beautiful. If the whole world becomes completely full of slaves, In the end, Mahmud is required, and that is all."
