Section 7 - The Tale and the Parable

Original content

English translation

A king has a daughter as beautiful as the moon, While you are inside the house at the bottom of a well. How can you ever see her face? Then what should you do? Become a constant presence in her alley. When you are a constant presence at that threshold, One glance of that moon will fall upon you. In both worlds, that one glance is enough, And if you want another, there will be another. That glance cannot be obtained by your striving, But one must sit at the threshold. Keep your prayer always burning, Until your blazing fire catches on. Your earnest striving is making a prayer, Bringing fire is not a game to play. But the fire did not desire every bowing, How can true color be upon every bowing? O you who bow without true prayer, how much more of this? This is not a metaphorical work, how much more of this? That bowing of yours is like a menstruant regarding repentance, Half a barleycorn of gold, a mere clipping, is better than you. The spiritual travelers went forth to the open treasure, While in the gambling house you are throwing dice (sixes and fives). The travelers have gone and you are left behind helpless, Strike your head on the knocker, for you are left at the door. The preoccupation of the world has waylaid you, You do not have a moment's care for God. Since you do not overcome your own ego, How can you become one who thinks of God? At last, wake up from the sleep of false hope, For a moment, O you drunk on carnal desire, become sober! Then step down into this valley like a man, So you may see hundreds of thousands of men of action. All of them entirely bewildered in His work, While you are so unconcerned about His secrets. How much shall I say? Whoever is a man of religion, In his heart there is a particle of this pain. But since you are not a man of the pain of religion, What do you know of religion, for you are nothing but impotent? Religion does not have much to do with the impotent, There is no result in saying much more of this.
