گفت روزی شبلی افتاده کاردر بردیوانگان شد سوکوار
One day Shibli, distressed in his affairs,
Became sorrowful in the presence of the madmen.
دید آنجا پس جوان دیوانهٔآشنا با حق نه چون بیگانهٔ
He saw there a mad youth,
Familiar with the Truth, not like a stranger.
گفت شبلی را که مردی روشنیگر سحرگاهان مناجاتی کنی
He said to Shibli, 'You are an enlightened man,
If you make a supplication at dawn,
از زفان من بگو با کردگارکوفکندی در جهانم بی قرار
Tell the Creator on my behalf,
'You cast me restless into the world,
دور کردی از پدر وز مادرمژندهٔ بگذاشتی اندر برم
You distanced me from my father and my mother,
You left a tattered garment on me,
پردهٔ عصمت ز من برداشتیدر غریبی بی دلم بگذاشتی
You lifted the veil of chastity from me,
You left me heartless in a strange land,
کردی آواره ز خان و مان مراآتشی انداختی در جان مرا
You made me a wanderer from home and hearth,
You cast a fire into my soul,
آتش تو گرچه در جانم خوشستبرجگر بیآییم زان آتشست
Although Your fire is sweet in my soul,
The burning of my liver is from that fire,
بستی از زنجیر سر تا پای منتا رهائی یابم ازتو وای من
You bound me with chains from head to foot,
Until I find deliverance from You, woe is me!
گر ترا گویم چه میسازی مرادر بلای دیگر اندازی مرا
If I tell You what You are doing to me,
You cast me into another affliction,
نه مرا جامه نه نانی میدهینان چرا ندهی چو جانی میدهی
You give me neither clothes nor bread,
Why do You not give bread when You give a soul?
چند باشم گرسنه این جایگاهگر نداری نان زجائی وام خواه
How long shall I be hungry in this place?
If You have no bread, ask for a loan from somewhere!'
این بگفت وپارهٔ شد هوشیاربعد از آن بگریست لختی زار زار
He said this and became a little aware,
After that he wept bitterly for a while.
گفت ای شیخ آنچه گفتم بیشکیگر بگوئی بو که درگیرد یکی
He said, 'O Sheikh, what I said, undoubtedly,
If you say it, perchance one word will take effect.'
رفت شبلی از برش گریان شدهدر تحیر مانده سرگردان شده
Shibli went away from him weeping,
Remaining bewildered and confounded.
چون برون رفت از در آن خانه زوددادش آواز از پس آن دیوانه زود
As soon as he quickly went out the door of that house,
The madman quickly called out after him.
گفت زنهار ای امام رهنمایتانگوئی آنچه گفتم با خدای
He said, 'Beware, O guiding Imam,
Do not tell God what I said,
زانکه گر با او بگوئی اینقدرزآنچه میکرد او کند صد ره بتر
Because if you tell Him even this much,
He will do a hundred times worse than what He did.
من نخواهم خواست از حق هیچ چیززآنکه با او درنگیرد هیچ نیز
I will not ask anything from God,
Because nothing works with Him anyway.
او همه با خویش میسازد مدامهرچه گوئی هیچ باشد والسلام
He always arranges everything according to Himself,
Whatever you say is nothing, and that is the end of it.
دوستان را هر نفس جانی دهدلیک جان سوزد اگر نانی دهد
He gives a soul to His friends at every breath,
But He burns the soul if He gives bread.
هر بلا کین قوم راحق داده استزیر آن گنج کرم بنهاده است
Every affliction that the Truth has given this group,
Beneath it He has placed a treasure of bounty.'
