Section 23 - The Tale and the Parable

Original content

English translation

One day, there was a circle full of learned people, Each person was also relating a topic. Until the conversation turned to poetry and poesy, Everyone was saying superficial words. They were speaking in praise and blame of poetry, The discussion grew long for both groups there. Bu Muhammad Ibn Khazin stepped forward, He delved deep into the perfection of poetry. He said, 'Poetry is both rhythmic and beautiful, In truth, poetry is the best of things. Because anything that falsehood mixes with, Will forever become devoid of luster. He said, it immediately turns the good ugly, Even if it were good, better than paradise. (But) if falsehood becomes manifest in poetry, In the embrace of poetry, it becomes like a beautiful painting. That through which falsehood becomes so beautiful, It is fitting if it becomes the best of things. That through which a lie becomes beautiful, O Lord, how great must be the luster of its truth!' When the people of art heard this reasoning, They unanimously agreed with him. They named poetry the best of things, How could there be a higher rank than this? Since poetry has been left with a bad name in our era, The mature ones have gone, and the raw ones remain. Inevitably, speech is now devoid of value, Praise is obsolete, it is the time of wisdom. My heart grew weary of the obsolete and the praised, The darkness of the praised took hold in my soul. For eternity, wisdom is sufficient as my praised one, In the depth of my soul, this aspiration is enough.
