Section 9 - The Tale and the Parable

Original content

English translation

A notable man in our city went mad, And became entirely estranged from reason. He had neither clothing nor a morsel of food, No one gave him a bite without a blow. Fifty years he spent in madness, Becoming a legend on the tongues of children. His silver gone, his face left pale like gold, Wandering from door to door, left in the dust of every threshold. His eyes full of blood, his heart full of fire, With lips sealed tight, enduring afflictions. One day he saw a fresh young man, Who had adorned himself for the sake of fame. That proud youth stepped into the mosque, For it was the time for his prayer. The mad old man said to him, 'O son, Go in, go in quickly, faster than this! For I too have gone in very often, And have done this deed much like you. I was both a man of prayer and a worshipper of God, Until He crumbled me in this way like bread in broth. If you desire a bewildered faith like mine, And if you want to be crumbled like this, Step in quickly so they may take you by the hand, For they do not grant you union just anytime.'
