آن یکی درخواند مجنون را ز راه
گفت اگر خواهی تو لیلی را بخواه

گفت هرگز مینباید زن مرا
بس بود این زاری و شیون مرا

گفت او را چون نمیخواهی برت
این همه سودا برون کن از سرت

یاد خوشتر گفت از لیلی مرا
سرکشی او را و واویلی مرا

مغز عشق عاشقان یادی بود
هرچه بگذشتی ازین بادی بود

من نیم زان عاشقی شهوت پرست
تا کنم خالی زیاد دوست دست

تاکه باشد یاد غیری در حساب
ذکر مولی باشد از تو در حجاب

چون همه یاد تو از مولی بود
همچو مجنونت همه لیلی بود

English translation

Someone called Majnun from the road, Saying, 'If you desire, ask for Layla.' He said, 'I never need a woman, This weeping and lamentation is enough for me.' The person said to him, 'Since you do not want her by your side, Cast all this melancholy out of your head.' He said, 'The remembrance of Layla is sweeter to me, Defiance is hers, and lamentation is mine. The core of lovers' love is remembrance; Whatever goes beyond this is but wind. I am not of those lust-worshipping lovers, That I would empty my hands of the Friend's memory. As long as the memory of another is in your account, The remembrance of the Lord will be veiled from you. When all your remembrance is of the Lord, Like Majnun, everything will be Layla for you.'
