اصمعی میرفت در راهی سوار
دید کناسی شده مشغول کار

نفس را میگفت ای نفس نفیس
کردمت آزاد از کار خسیس

هم ترا دایم گرامی داشتم
هم برای نیک نامی داشتم

اصمعی گفتش تو باری این مگوی
این سخن اینجا در آن مسکین مگوی

چون تو هستی در نجاست کارگر
آن چه باشد در جهان زین خوارتر

گفت باشد خوارتر افتادنم
بر در همچون توئی استادنم

هرکه پیش خلق خدمتگر بود
کار من صد بار ازو بهتر بود

گرچه ره جز سر بریدن نبودم
گردن منت کشیدن نبودم

English translation

Asma'i was riding along a road, He saw a latrine cleaner busy at work. He was saying to his soul, "O precious soul, I have freed you from base labor. I have always held you in high regard, And I have kept you for the sake of a good name." Asma'i said to him, "You, at least, should not say this! Do not speak these words here in this miserable state! Since you are a worker in filth, What in the world could be more degrading than this?" He replied, "What would be a more degrading fall for me, Is standing at the door of someone like you! Whoever is a servant to other people, My work is a hundred times better than his. Even if there were no path for me but to have my head severed, I would not bow my neck to bear the burden of obligation."
