خسروی در کوه شد بهر شکار
بود بقراط آن زمان در کنج غار

همچو حیوانی گیه میخورد خوش
هر سوئی بیخود نگه میکرد خوش

از حشم یک تن بدید اورا ز راه
گفت عمری کرد استدعات شاه

تا تو باشی همنشینش روز و شب
میگریزی می نیائی در طلب

نفس قانع کو گوائی میکند
در حقیقت پادشائی میکند

گفت بقراطش که ای مغرور شاه
گر تو قانع بودئی هم از گیاه

برگیه چون من بسنده کردئی
کی تن آزاد بنده کردئی

چون دهد نفسی بدین اندک رضا
با چه کار آید مر او را پادشا

تا چه خواهم کرد مشتی خام را
بیقراری چند بی آرام را

این دمم تا مرگ برگ خویش هست
هرچه خواهم بیش از آنم پیش هست

زر چه خواهم کرد اگر قارون نیم
چند خواهم گشت اگر گردون نیم

برگ عمرم هست بنشینم خوشی
میگذارم عمر شیرینم خوشی

عمر روزی پنج و شش می بگذرد
خواه ناخوش خواه خوش میبگذرد

چون چنین می بگذرد عمری که هست
چیست جز باد از چنین عمری بدست

English translation

A king went to the mountain to hunt, Hippocrates was at that time in the corner of a cave. Like an animal, he was happily eating grass, Happily looking around aimlessly. One of the retinue saw him from the path, And said, "For a lifetime the king has summoned you, So that you might be his companion day and night; But you flee and do not come when sought. A contented soul that bears witness, In truth, rules as a king." Hippocrates said to him, "O one deluded by the king! If you too were content with grass, And made do with grass like me, When would you have enslaved a free body? When a soul is satisfied with this little, What use is a king to it? What will I do with a handful of immature men? With some restless, unquiet people? From this moment until death, I have my provisions, Whatever I want, more than that is before me. What will I do with gold, if I am not Qarun? How much will I revolve, if I am not the celestial sphere? I have the provisions of my life, I sit happily, I pass my sweet life happily. Life passes by in five or six days, Whether unpleasant or pleasant, it passes. Since the life that exists passes like this, What is in hand from such a life but wind?"
