Section 2 - The Tale and the Parable

English translation

A disciple before a renowned sheikh Was reciting the name of Truth (God) beyond count. The sheikh said to him, "O very incomplete one, In truth, Truth (God) has no name at all. For whatever you call Him, that is not Him; That is you, and whatever you know, that is not Him. If you forcibly drink a hundred oceans, Be like a mountain and do not be turbulent like the sea. Do not be such that from a single sip, You stagger from side to side like a chess piece. Drink seven oceans, then in agony, Die from the desire for another drop. Die thirsty for Him if you are alive, Be the dust of this door if you are a servant. Do not lick the bowl so much, O wondrous one; When you have eaten, ask for another bowl. Whoever has not become pregnant with this pain, He is a woman, he is not a man of this. A single atom of the pain of God in your heart Is better for you than the harvest of both worlds. People, in whatever manner and path they die, Since they will all carry it eternally. I am dwelling in this lowliness, in this pain, So that this very pain will be my companion tomorrow. I am alive in the world every breath by this pain, My sole companion in the grave is this pain. In the resurrection, may this pain be my intimate friend, May my profession and my assembly be this pain. Whether I am of heaven or of hell, May my soul be intoxicated with this pain, O brother. Whoever lacks this pain is not a man, There is no remedy if you do not have this pain. O Creator, I am helpless in Your alley, Fallen headlong, my heart is towards You. O You, a world of pain is my companion from You, I want to borrow another pain from You. The suffering in Your alley is a pleasant suffering, Your pain in the depths of the soul is a pleasant treasure. You can do whatever You want, Increase this pain of Yours in me every moment. If Your pain does not remain for Attar, He will not want either the infidel or the religious. He needs Your pain which burns his soul, With his feet on the fire, the world burns him. My heart needs Your pain, Your pain, But not according to my worth, according to Yours. Send as much pain as You have, But send help to the heart as well. Where could the heart bear a pain without Your help, For not every man has borne such a pain. O Creator, as long as this dog is within me, The path of my soul towards You is unsafe. Either cast it into work by the decree of religious law, Or cast it entirely into the salt marsh. I have had enough of the selfishness of this conceited dog, If I am not, You are, this is enough for me. You have many like me behind everyone, I do not have anyone but You until eternity. Since You drew me from the edge into the middle, In the middle, I am aside from free will. I am left alone in the middle of the way, I have no one, I am left without head and feet. O Someone for every nobody, I am very alone, If You are Someone for my loneliness, it is enough for me. If I, the lonely one, have no one, The memory of You is enough as my companion until eternity.
