Section 3 - The Tale and the Parable

English translation
When Pharaoh was drowning at that time, Gabriel filled his mouth with mud. He had spoken half of the declaration of faith, In the other half, he had departed from the world. Out of grace, You [God] said: 'O Trusted Spirit (Gabriel), If that accursed one had said this declaration completely, His four hundred years of the sin of disbelief, I would have erased through the perfection of My power.' O Creator, if I have been among the people of habit (ordinary sinners), At least in the end I have been in the declaration of faith. So I too have a Pharaoh of the ego (nafs), Which has nothing but the declaration of faith. Before death, it has spoken this declaration of faith, Upon the declaration of faith it has risen and slept. Erase its pride and its Pharaoh-like nature, Save the soul from its hundredfold hypocrisies. Since the soul is Your prey, do not give it to its hook, It is under Your hand, do not lose it from Your hand. Since in the measure of eternity before sin, From sin the blanket of the heart became black. How can I make it white with my own hand? And how can I make it despair of Your door? You can make a hair like pitch (black), Not by the scent of a cause, the color of milk (white). If the color of my blanket has become black, You make it white like my hair, O Generous One! Do not turn me away in despair from Your door, Out of Your grace, turn the blackness white. I have fallen on the path of fear and hope, I have fallen into black and white. Every breath a sin from me piles up, And from You a bounty continuously arrives. Both in this world You keep me well, And in that world do not let me down. If a whole world turns me into particles, When would I be absent from Your court for a moment? As my tongue burned from the heat of speaking, Speech like fire inflamed the world upon me. O Lord, save me from the hand of my tongue, Put Your hand forward and save me from the world. I am drunk and senseless, give me sobriety; I am asleep without myself, give me awakening. Since You brought me in, bring me to tranquility; Since You bestowed (life), bring me to forgiveness. If the ego polluted me in its adornment, You, by Your holiness, cleanse me from my pollution. If from lack of water I became a fire-kindler, Since I am thirsty for Your bounty, do not burn my soul. And if from ignorance I was dark of mind, You, out of Your grace, do not contend with ignorant me. And if with my own hand I tore open the veil, You, from Your concealment, pull a veil over me. And if I gave my days to the wind of ignorance, You, from Your pardon, accept and pass over it. And if I broke the glass like a captive child, You, out of Your grace, do not hold it against a child like me. Since I broke the glass and the oil spilled, I know no refuge from You except in You. From head to foot I am in lamentation, whether vein or skin, Like a harp, because You hold me dear. If You make me distressed at the foot of Your wrath, You pour a hundred scatterings of grace upon my head. And if You wound me with the sword of justice, You make Your grace the ointment for my soul. And if out of vengeance You cleave my chest open, You open a hundred doors of love for me from that enmity. If fear shows me one steep obstacle, From hope You untie a hundred knots for me. Although You show me my stinginess and anger, You bring Your bounty and satisfaction before my eyes. If You frighten me with Your torment, You quickly teach me the lesson of lamentation. And if You bring a dark path before me, You bring a hundred lamps from Your grace for me. If You plunge my head into a stormy sea, You teach me swimming and give me strength. You pull me from the path with a hundred worlds of sin, So that I may take refuge with You from my own shame. Although the movement is from me, the tranquility is from You; If one step is from me, a hundred steps are from You. Although there is comfort from Your giving, No giving is like Your forgiving. O You whose nature is fidelity, do not hold my cruelty against me; O You whose nature is granting, do not hold my errors against me. If no one will seek my excuse (intercede for me), Your pardon is sufficient as the apologist for my crime. The essence of Your pardon was seeking the sinner; For this reason, I took to the arena of disobedience. When I saw Your veil-covering (forgiveness) solving problems, I myself tore open the veil again with my own hand. I saw Your mercy thirsty and seeking water, I spilled my own face's water (honor) through sin. Since I have seen You as the Absolute Reviver, I have seen killing myself as a certainty. I have cast my eyes upon a hundred seas of love, Therefore I have cast myself aside. You are the Honorer, and I have brought the proof; I have brought myself lowly before You. I became aware of the sea of Your grace; I came with an empty hand and a thirsty liver. I have seen Your water of life (giving life to) a world, I am dying from the desire for a single dewdrop. I am seeking the flood of Your bounty; I arrive with dry lips from the drought. From the bow of decree and destiny that passed, I make my soul the target for every arrow that passed. I would give up a hundred lives for a single arrow, If with Your own hand You pull the arrowhead out. Since You know everything, what can I say to You? Since You are in the soul, why do I seek You? From what I said, since I became beside myself because of it, Whatever I say, You are more than that, more than that! O Creator, at that moment when breath remains in eternity, I need a companion from Your grace. When the time of that time comes, O Generous One, You give me strength at that time, O Great One! So that at that time, from the soul-taking world, I may scatter myself eternally. If a single breeze comes from Your direction, Stomping my feet (dancing), I would give up my soul in Your alley. One moment with You in that moment makes me complete; O You who are everything, give me that moment, and peace!
