پیش ذوالقرنین شد مردی دژم
سیم خواست از شاه عالم یک درم

شاه کان بشنود گفت ای بی خبر
از چو من شاهی که خواهد این قدر

گفت پس شهری ده و گنجی مرا
تا براید کار بی رنجی مرا

گفت چندینی بشاه چین دهند
تو که باشی تا ترا چندین دهند

سالک سرگشته چون اینجا رسید
رخت همت هرچه بد اینجا کشید

روی از پس رفتنش ممکن نبود
ور ز پس میرفت دل ساکن نبود

ره بپیشان بردنش امکان نداشت
زانکه هیچ این ره سروپایان نداشت

دید عالم عالم از خون موج زن
گاه عرش و گاه گردون موج زن

صد هزاران عالم پر شور بود
جای زاری بد نه جای زور بود

لاجرم انبان زاری برگرفت
در بدر بی زور زاری درگرفت

خویشتن را رسته دید اول ز بند
لاجرم بر شد برین دود بلند

پر شد از پندار وسودا در گرفت
زان بدین زودی ز بالا درگرفت

اول آغازی نهاد از جبرئیل
صدقه میجست او چو ابناء السبیل

در بدر میرفت تا پایان کار
بشنو اکنون قصه از پیشان کار

English translation

A dejected man went before Dhu'l-Qarnayn, And asked the king of the world for one silver dirham. The king, when he heard this, said: 'O ignorant one, Who asks for such a trifle from a king like me?' He said: 'Then give me a city and a treasure, So that my affairs may be resolved without hardship.' The king replied: 'Such things are given to the king of China, Who are you that they should give you so much?' When the bewildered seeker reached this stage, He brought whatever baggage of aspiration he had here. It was impossible for him to turn back, And if he went back, his heart would not find rest. He had no possibility of moving forward, Because this path had neither beginning nor end. He saw world upon world surging with blood, Sometimes the divine throne and sometimes the heavenly sphere surging. A hundred thousand worlds were full of turmoil; It was a place for lamentation, not a place for force. Inevitably, he took up the beggar's bag of lamentation, Door to door, lacking strength, he started lamenting. First, he saw himself liberated from bondage, Inevitably he ascended upon this lofty smoke. He became full of conceit, and melancholy took hold, From that, he so quickly caught fire from above. First, he made a start with Gabriel; He sought charity like a wayfarer. He went from door to door until the end of the affair; Hear now the story of what comes next.
