Section 32 - The Beginning of the Book

Original content

English translation

Become an ear, from head to foot, without a veil So that I may lay the foundation of this book with you If you are able to catch even a scent of it You can snatch the ball from the two worlds If anyone has an outward suspicion That this speech goes crooked like a bow He sees it crooked from the outside, but Inwardly, it is exceedingly good and right That the spiritual traveler (salik) speaks with an angel And seeks speech from earth and heaven Or passes over the Divine Throne and the Footstool Or asks words from this and that He gains benefit from the prophets And hears the story from every single atom All of that is from the language of state (zaban-e hal) Not from the language of speech (zaban-e qal) In the language of speech, it is a lie, but In the language of state, it is full of truth and goodness If you do not fully recognize the language of state Call it the language of thought, and that is all Since he speaks this from state and not from speech Believe him and do not say this is impossible Since it is permissible to see everything in a dream If someone sees it in an unveiling (kashf), do not turn your head away Although on the path there might be satanic unveilings Yet there is also the angelic and spiritual realm Spiritual taste (dhawq), piety, and yearning for God are needed So that one can separate these two types of laws If one day they draw you into this field You will see the mark they draw upon the men [of God] Then, of this style of meaning, a hundred thousand You will see and know and hold firm This style of speech is like independent reasoning (ijtihad) One must believe in both the good and the bad It is either wrong or right, without a doubt So there will be two rewards or one for this My purpose from this explanation is only this That I may breathe a word with you about the spiritual traveler Who went to Gabriel and above the Throne Then came back from above the Throne to the carpet [earth] Or he went above the heavens before an angel Or went beneath the earth toward the fish You should not attribute all that to a lie, but listen And believe it not from speech (qal) but from state (hal) First, I lay out this principle for you I establish this firm foundation with you So that when you see much of this style of speech You will not sit much in denial Because this beautiful book for the elite and the common Is of this style that I have spoken, and that is all For the wayfarer, the traveler of the path is his thought A thought that is acquired from His remembrance One must invoke remembrance (dhikr) so that it brings thought (fekr) And brings a hundred thousand virgin meanings A thought that arises from the illusion of the intellect That is not the unseen, it arises from tradition Intellectual thought is for the disbelievers The thought of the heart is for the man of action The traveler of thought who has come into action Has appeared not from the intellect, but from the heart The people of the heart have another taste and understanding Which is superior to the understanding of both worlds Whoever puts that understanding into action Casts himself into the sea of secrets
