Section 2 - The Tale and the Parable

Original content

English translation

The oppressors took a man captive They poured water over him like freezing cold They beat him with sticks and he cried out miserably "Take my hand, O Almighty God" The Sheikh of Mihna was passing by that place A servant said to him, "O Sultan of the Way, If you intercede for him with them I know it to be as good as an act of devotion." He said, "How can I intercede for him, Since it is only at this time that he remembered God? Whoever remembers Him only at this moment, May his heart be torn and his head severed from him. Remembrance is better when it brings tranquility, When it brings the snake into the snare like an ant."
