داشت آن سلطان که محمودست نامسرکش و بی باک و خونی یک غلام
That sultan whose name is Mahmud had
A rebellious, fearless, and bloodthirsty slave.
عاقبت راهی زد آن بیروی و راهحالیش گردن زدن فرمود شاه
Eventually, that wayward one committed a robbery;
The king immediately ordered him to be beheaded.
لیک اول گفت شاه حق شناستا از آن مجلس رود بیرون ایاس
But first, the truth-recognizing king said
That Ayaz should leave that assembly.
گفت از ما لطف دیدست او مدامکی تواند دید قهرم این غلام
He said, 'He has always seen grace from us;
How can this slave endure seeing my wrath?
هرکه او در لطف ما پرورده شداز خیال قهر ما آزرده شد
Whoever was raised in our grace,
Would be hurt by the mere thought of our wrath.'
ای عجب چون این سخن بشنید ایاسگفت فرخ آنکه شاه حق شناس
Oh wonder! When Ayaz heard these words,
He said, 'Fortunate is he whom the truth-recognizing king
گردنش یکبار زد یکبار رستتا قیامت از غم و تیمار رست
Beheads once, he is freed once and for all;
Until resurrection, he is freed from sorrow and care.
کار من بنگر که روزی چندبارمیشوم از تیغ هیبت کشته زار
Look at my state, for several times a day
I am miserably killed by the sword of awe.
با ادب در پیش سلطان تن زدنسخت تر باشد ز صد گردن زدن
To remain silent and respectful in front of the sultan
Is harder than a hundred beheadings.
روز و شب در قهر میسوزد مداموانگهم پروردهٔ لطفست نام
Day and night, one constantly burns in wrath,
And yet my name is "raised by grace".
لطف او در حق هرک افزون بودبی شک آنکس غرقه تر در خون بود
His grace towards anyone who receives more of it,
Undoubtedly, that person is more drowned in blood.'
