بخش ۱۷ - فی التعصب / Section 17 - On Sectarian Prejudice

ای تعصب بند بندت کرده بند
چند گوئی چند از هفتاد و اند

در سلامت هفتصد ملت ز تو
لیک هفتاد و دو پر علت ز تو

هست کیش و راه و ملت بیشمار
تا تو بشماری نیابی روزگار

هر زمان خونی دگر نتوان گرفت
با همه کس تیغ بر نتوان گرفت

تو یکی پس در یکی رو بیشکی
تا یکی اندر یکی باشد یکی

بی تعصب گرد و بی تقلید شو
شرک سوز و غرقهٔ توحید شو

گر تو هستی دوربین و راز دان
پس طبیعت از شریعت باز دان

تا کنی تو پس روی صدیق را
یا علی آن عالم تحقیق را

چون تو بر تقلید باشی کار ساز
شرع را از طبع کی دانی تو باز

گر تو بر تقلید خواهی رفت راه
کوه باشی نه جوی ارزی نه کاه

کرهء خر بر شریعت کی رود
یا رود جز بر طبیعت کی رود

کرهء خر کز پس مادر رود
چون بتقلیدی رود هم خر رود

چون صحابه غرق توحید آمدند
نه چو تو پس رو بتقلید آمدند

تو در ایشان گرتصرف میکنی
در چراغ چارمین پف میکنی

چون صحابه یک بیک آزاده اند
در هدایت چون نجوم افتاده اند

گر کسی در یک تن از آن قوم پاک
کرد طعنی بر ستاره ریخت خاک

گر ستاره یک بیک خواهند رفت
جمله آخر در فلک خواهند رفت

هر یکی چون از فلک تابنده اند
رهبرند و راهرو تا زنده اند

نور بخشند و جهان افروز پاک
گر تو کوری مینبینی زان چه باک

English translation

O fanaticism, your bonds have bound you limb by limb, How long will you speak of the seventy-odd sects? Seven hundred nations may be safe from you, But the seventy-two are full of illness because of you. There are countless faiths, paths, and nations; If you were to count them, you would have no time left. One cannot shed another's blood at every moment, One cannot draw a sword against everyone. You are one, so follow the One without a doubt, So that one within one may be one. Become free of sectarian prejudice and free of blind imitation, Burn away polytheism and be drowned in monotheism. If you are far-sighted and a knower of secrets, Then distinguish base nature from divine law, So that you may follow the Truthful One (Abu Bakr), Or Ali, that scholar of verification. When you base your actions on blind imitation, How can you distinguish the divine law from base nature? If you want to travel the path on blind imitation, Though you be a mountain, you will not be worth a stream or a straw. When does a donkey foal walk upon the divine law? Or if it walks, when does it walk except by base nature? The donkey foal that walks behind its mother, Since it walks by blind imitation, it walks as a donkey. Since the Companions came drowned in monotheism, They did not come as followers of blind imitation like you. If you meddle with them, You are blowing out the fourth lamp. Since the Companions are, one by one, noble and free, In guidance, they have fallen like stars. If anyone casts blame on a single person of that pure group, He has thrown dirt at a star. Even if the stars will depart one by one, All will ultimately go to the heavens. Since each one is shining from the heavens, They are guides and wayfarers as long as they live. They bestow light and illuminate the world purely; If you are blind and do not see, what fear is there of that?
