سوی آن دیوانه شد مردی عزیز
گفت هستت آرزوی هیچ چیز

گفت ده روزست تا من گرسنه
مانده ام لوتیم باید ده تنه

گفت دل خوش کن که رفتم این زمانت
از پی حلوا و بریانی و نانت

گفت غلبه میمکن ای ژاژ خای
نرم گو تا نشنود یعنی خدای

گر نیم آهسته کن آواز را
زانکه گر حق بشنود این راز را

هیچ نگذارد که نانم آوری
لیک گوید تا بجانم آوری

دوست را زان گرسنه دارد مدام
تا ز جان خویش سیر آید تمام

چون زجان سیرآید او در درد کار
گرسنه گردد بجانان بی قرار

English translation

A dear man went towards that madman, He said, 'Do you have a desire for anything?' He said, 'It has been ten days that I have remained hungry, I need a feast for ten men.' He said, 'Cheer up, for I am going right now, To fetch you halva, roasted meat, and bread.' He said, 'Do not clamor, oh idle talker, Speak softly so that God does not hear. Lower your voice, if not by half, Because if the Truth hears this secret, He will let you bring me no bread at all, But rather He will tell you to torment my soul. He keeps the friend hungry constantly for this reason, So that he may become entirely weary of his own life. When he becomes weary of life in the agony of this work, He becomes restlessly hungry for the Beloved.'
