In Attar's Mosibat Nameh, Majnun's act of kissing the doors and walls of Layla's neighborhood symbolises the mystical concept of seeing the Beloved's manifestation (tajalli) in all of creation. When questioned why he kisses inanimate walls that can do nothing for him, Majnun replies that he does not see the walls themselves, but only the face of the beloved. In Sufism, this represents the stage of contemplation where the mystic looks past the physical form of the created world and perceives only the Divine presence reflected in it.
