Section 5 - The Tale and the Parable

Original content

English translation

Majnun became more distraught at every moment, As he continued to wander in Layla's alley. Whatever he saw in Layla's alley, He would kiss and bestow kisses upon. Sometimes he would embrace the doors and walls, Sometimes he would traverse the path from foot to head. He would cry out in the midst of that pleasant alley, Joyfully scattering dust from every side. The next day, someone said to him, 'Last night, Why did you make all that noise and clamor? You left no door or wall untouched? Embracing and holding them? No door will solve any problem for you, No wall will open a door for you.' Majnun remembered a great oath, He said, 'Since I took residence in her alley, I have not seen within her alley, Upon the doors and walls, anything but her face. If I kiss a door, it is Layla, If I pour dust on my head, it is Layla. Since everything in her alley is Layla, Her alley is to me nothing but her face. At every moment you need a hundred eyes, And for every eye, a hundred glances are needed, So that with each glance you cast, You behold a hundred divine spectacles. A heart that holds such a glance in low esteem, Will not rest for a moment from looking. If instead of one eye there were a thousand, Those thousands of eyes would be drowned in work.'
