In this tale from Attar's Mosibat Nameh, Majnun's father takes him to the Kaaba, hoping he will pray to God to be cured of his obsessive love for Layla. Instead, Majnun prays for his love and suffering to be multiplied a hundredfold. This allegory illustrates the Sufi concept that true love (often representing divine love) is not an affliction to be cured, but a spiritual state to be deepened, even at the cost of immense suffering. The true lover embraces the pain of love rather than seeking relief from it.
