In Section 40 of Jami's 'Silsilat al-Dhahab' (from 'Haft Awrang'), the story of the furnace-heater who is so captivated by the beauty of the prince that his rags catch fire and burn his body without his awareness serves as an allegory for the Sufi state of complete mystical absorption ('istighraq') and self-annihilation ('fana'). The furnace-heater represents the devoted seeker whose ego and physical awareness are entirely consumed by the radiance of the Divine Beloved (the prince). Jami uses this narrative to illustrate how true divine love transcends physical sensation and material consciousness, rendering the lover completely oblivious to worldly suffering or bodily harm in the presence of the Beloved.
