In this section of Attar's Mosibat Nameh, the poet presents an allegory of the Sufi mystic Shibli requesting the pearl of divine wisdom from his master, Junayd of Baghdad. Junayd explains that this spiritual pearl cannot be bought, as it is priceless and would only cause distress, nor can it be gifted freely, as Shibli would fail to appreciate its true value and fall into self-conceit. Instead, Junayd instructs Shibli to plunge into the ocean of rigorous self-discipline (riyāḍat) with patience and endurance, illustrating that genuine spiritual realization cannot be acquired effortlessly but must be earned through personal devotion and hardship.
