Section 2 - The Tale and the Parable

Original content

English translation

Shibli went first to Junayd, And said, 'I am bound from head to toe. They say this in every land, That you have given a jewel to an acquaintance. Either bestow a jewel upon me as well, Or else sell it to me and enlighten me.' He replied, 'If I sell this jewel to you, Since you cannot pay its price, it will leave you distressed. And if I bestow it, since it comes to you so easily, You will not appreciate its value and will become self-complacent. Instead, like me, walk on your head [strive with utmost devotion], And drown yourself in the ocean of spiritual discipline, So that in that sea, through patience and anticipation, That jewel will finally come to your shore.'
