The Allegory of the Adorned Pottery in Asrar Nameh

In this section of Attar's Asrar Nameh, the poet presents an allegory of a piece of pottery (sofāl) that is beautifully painted and dressed in fine silk. From a distance, it appears as a breathtaking beauty (a houri), but when it inevitably falls from the roof and shatters, it is revealed to be nothing more than worthless shards of clay. Attar uses this metaphor to critique humanity's infatuation with superficial appearances and transient worldly beauty. The poem warns the reader that the physical world, despite its attractive facade, is ultimately devoid of lasting substance and will eventually return to dust.
