When questioned why it avoids the glorious sun, the bat explains that the physical sun is not worthy of devotion because it is subject to decline, eclipse, and ultimate decay (turning black and setting). In Sufi mysticism, this represents the seeker's realization that any light or beauty in the material world is temporary, and one must look past the physical universe's grandest symbols to find the absolute, unchanging Divine source.
