The Allegory of the Beggar, the King, and Patience in Asrar Nameh

In Section 7 of Attar's Asrar Nameh, the allegory of a beggar and a king is used to illustrate the virtues of patience (صبر) and contentment (قناعت). A beggar, sheltering in a warm oven during a freezing winter night, observes a king passing by in a luxurious sable coat. The beggar points out that despite their vastly different circumstances and the king's ignorance of the harsh cold, the night inevitably passes for both of them alike. The narrative uses this tale to emphasize that patience is universally praiseworthy, while haste and greed lead to ruin. To further underscore this point, the poem compares human greed to the story of Adam and the wheat, which ultimately caused his expulsion from Paradise.
