The Allegory of the Bow of Old Age in Asrar Nameh
In Farid al-Din Attar's Asrar Nameh, the tale of a young man mocking an elder's hunched back serves as a poignant allegory for the inevitability of physical decline and the arrogance of youth. The young man derisively asks the price of the old man's 'bow' (his bent posture). The elder wisely replies that time bestowed it upon him for free, warning the youth that he too will receive this 'gift' as he ages. This parable utilizes the visual metaphor of a bow (kaman) to emphasize human mortality and the inescapable trajectory of aging, urging spiritual reflection rather than youthful pride.
