The Allegory of the Cat and the Roast Meat in Asrar Nameh
This section of Attar's Asrar Nameh presents a parable about a cat that steals roast meat and a man who angrily chases and beats it. A wise observer intervenes, suggesting that the man should instead discipline his own dog-like nature. In Sufi literature, animals such as dogs and cats frequently serve as allegories for the base ego (nafs) and worldly greed. This story illustrates the human tendency to aggressively punish others for their visible transgressions while remaining blind to one's own inner flaws and predatory instincts.
