مگر آن گربه در بریانی آویخت
ربود از سفره بریانی و بگریخت

یکی شد تا ز پیشش ره بگیرد
مگر آن گربه را ناگه بگیرد

عزیزی آن بدید از دور ناگاه
که می زد گربه را آن مرد در راه

بدو گفت ای ز دل رفته قرارت
بیفتادست با این گربه کارت

تو آن سگ را زن ای سگ طبع ناساز
که بریانی ستاند گربه را باز

زهی خوش با سگی تازی نشسته
بپیش سگ بدمسازی نشسته

بپیش سگ بسوزن دادن آیند
چو سوزن داده شد تیغ آزمایند

بکار سگ بسی گردی تو شیری
هنوز این سگ نیاوردست سیری

تو سگ را بند کن روزی نهادست
که گردن بستهٔ با سگ گشادست

فرو ماندی همی چون مبتلایی
که چون قوتی بدست آری ز جایی

تو بر رزاق ایمن باش آخر
صبوری ورز وساکن باش آخر

ز کافر می نگیرد رزق خود باز
کجا گیرد ز مرد پر خرد باز

English translation

It happened that a cat clung to the roasted meat, Snatched the roast from the cloth and fled. Someone moved to block its path, Hoping to catch that cat suddenly. A wise one suddenly saw from afar, That the man was beating the cat on the road. He said to him, 'O you who have lost your peace of heart, Has your business fallen with this cat? Strike that dog [of your ego], O you of discordant dog-like nature, For it takes the roasted meat away from the cat. How happily you sit with a hunting hound, Sitting in disharmony before the dog. They come offering a needle before the dog, When the needle is given, they test the sword. In the dog's service you become much like a lion, Yet this dog has not yet brought satiation. Tie up the dog, for daily provision is preordained, For a tied neck is liberation from the dog. You remain helpless like an afflicted soul, Wondering how to get sustenance from somewhere. Trust safely in the Provider in the end, Practice patience and be at peace in the end. He does not withhold His provision from an unbeliever, How could He withhold it from a man full of wisdom?'
