چنین گفت آن جوانمرد پگه خیز
که پیش از صبحدم در طاعت آویز

به هر طاعت که فرمودند پای آر
نماز چاشت آنگاهی بجای آر

چو این کردی ز فرمان بیش کردی
نکو کردی تو آن خویش کردی

کنون گر در رسد بازیت از راه
نشیند بر سر دست تو ناگاه

تو پایش گیر کاینجا جمله سودست
وگرنه باز گیر تو که بودست

اگر آویزشی داری به مویی
نیابی بوی او از هیچ سویی

مگر پالوده گردی روزگاری
که تا بویی بیابی از کناری

ز تو تا هست مویی مانده بر جای
بدان یک موی مانی بند بر پای

جنب را بر تن ار خشک است یک موی
هنوزش نانمازی دان به صد روی

چو مویی تا به کوهی در حساب است
چه مویی و چه کوهی چون حجاب است

تو تا یکبارگی جان درنبازی
جنب دانم ترا و نانمازی

مکاتب را اگر یک جو بماندست
بدان جو جاودان در گو بماندست

تویی تو ترا نامحرم آمد
تو بی تو شو که آدم آن دم آمد

اگر آیینه تو همدم تست
چو از دم تیره شد نامحرم تست

دو همدم را که با همشان حساب است
اگر مویی میان باشد حجاب است

چو بنشیند به خلوت یار با یار
نفس نامحرم افتد همچو اغیار

ندانی کرد هرگز خلوت آغاز
مگر از هر چه داری خو کنی باز

نه زان شیر مردان سر راه
که گردد جان تو زین راز آگاه

علی الجمله یقین بشناس مطلق
که از حق نیست برخوردار جز حق

بگو تا در خور حق یار که بود
چو جز حق نیست برخوردار که بود

چو در دریای قدرت قطرهٔ تو
چو با خورشید حضرت ذرهٔ تو

چگونه وصل او داری تو امید
چگونه بر توانی شد به خورشید

تو می خواهی بزاری و بزوری
که آید پیل در سوراخ موری

برو بنشین که جان از دست برخاست
درآمد هوشیار و مست برخاست

اگر جان است دایم غرقه اوست
وگر عقل او برون از حلقه اوست

هزاران ذره سرگردان بماندست
ولی خورشید در ایوان بماندست

درین دریا هزاران قطره پنهانست
ولی گوهر درون قعر پنهانست

بسی در وصف او تصنیف کردند
بسی با یکدگر تعریف کردند

هزاران قرن می کردند فکرت
بآخر با سرآمد عجز و حیرت

زهی دریای پر در الهی
که ننشیند برو گرد تباهی

سخن ها می رود چون آب زر پاک
ولیکن دیده داری تو پر خاک

دلت با نفس شهوت خوی کرده
کجا بیند معانی زیر پرده

چو تو عالم ندانی جز خیالی
کجا یابی ازین معنی کمالی

ترا با این چه کار ای خفته باری
ندارد مشک با کناس کاری

English translation

Thus spoke that early-rising chivalrous youth: "Before dawn, engage yourself in devotion. Stand firm in every obedience they commanded, And then perform the mid-morning prayer. When you do this, you have done more than commanded; You have done well, and acted for your own good. Now, if a falcon arrives from the path, And suddenly alights upon your hand, Hold its feet, for here lies all profit, Otherwise, it will fly back to where it was. If you have an attachment, even to a single hair, You will not catch His scent from any direction, Unless you become purified over time, So you might catch a scent from a margin. As long as a single hair of yours remains in place, You will remain fettered by that one hair. If a ritually impure person has but one dry hair on his body, Consider him still impure for prayer in a hundred ways. Since a hair up to a mountain is all counted the same, What is a hair and what is a mountain when it is a veil? Until you completely risk and lose your soul, I consider you impure and unfit for prayer. If a slave buying his freedom owes but one barley grain, Because of that grain, he remains forever in the pit. Your 'you-ness' has become a stranger to you; Become you without yourself, for Adam came at that moment. If your mirror is your intimate companion, When it is clouded by breath, it becomes a stranger to you. For two companions who are settling accounts with each other, If there is a hair's breadth between them, it is a veil. When friend sits in seclusion with Friend, Breath itself becomes an intruder, like strangers. You can never begin seclusion with God, Unless you detach yourself from all that you possess. You are not of those lion-hearted men of the path, For your soul to become aware of this secret. In short, know this with absolute certainty: None partakes of the Truth except the Truth. Tell me, who could be a worthy companion for the Truth? Since none partakes of the Truth except the Truth! Since you are but a drop in the ocean of Power, Since you are but a mote with the sun of the Presence, How can you hope for union with Him? How can you ascend to the sun? You desire, with weeping and force, For an elephant to pass through an ant's hole! Go and sit down, for the soul has slipped from your grasp; The sober entered, and rose up intoxicated. If there is a soul, it is constantly drowned in Him, And if it is intellect, it is outside His circle. Thousands of motes remain wandering, While the sun remains in the grand hall. In this sea, thousands of drops are hidden, But the pearl is hidden deep within the abyss. Many composed books in His description, Many defined Him to one another. For thousands of centuries, they pondered, But in the end, it culminated in helplessness and bewilderment. Hail to the Divine sea full of pearls, Upon which the dust of corruption never settles. Words flow as pure as liquid gold, But your eyes are filled with dust. Your heart has become accustomed to lustful desires; How can it see the meanings behind the veil? Since you know the world as nothing but a fantasy, How can you attain perfection from this meaning? What business do you have with this, O heavy sleeper? Musk has no business with a latrine sweeper!"
