چنین گفت آن جوانمرد پگه خیزکه پیش از صبحدم در طاعت آویز
Thus spoke that early-rising chivalrous youth:
"Before dawn, engage yourself in devotion.
به هر طاعت که فرمودند پای آرنماز چاشت آنگاهی بجای آر
Stand firm in every obedience they commanded,
And then perform the mid-morning prayer.
چو این کردی ز فرمان بیش کردینکو کردی تو آن خویش کردی
When you do this, you have done more than commanded;
You have done well, and acted for your own good.
کنون گر در رسد بازیت از راهنشیند بر سر دست تو ناگاه
Now, if a falcon arrives from the path,
And suddenly alights upon your hand,
تو پایش گیر کاینجا جمله سودستوگرنه باز گیر تو که بودست
Hold its feet, for here lies all profit,
Otherwise, it will fly back to where it was.
اگر آویزشی داری به مویینیابی بوی او از هیچ سویی
If you have an attachment, even to a single hair,
You will not catch His scent from any direction,
مگر پالوده گردی روزگاریکه تا بویی بیابی از کناری
Unless you become purified over time,
So you might catch a scent from a margin.
ز تو تا هست مویی مانده بر جایبدان یک موی مانی بند بر پای
As long as a single hair of yours remains in place,
You will remain fettered by that one hair.
جنب را بر تن ار خشک است یک مویهنوزش نانمازی دان به صد روی
If a ritually impure person has but one dry hair on his body,
Consider him still impure for prayer in a hundred ways.
چو مویی تا به کوهی در حساب استچه مویی و چه کوهی چون حجاب است
Since a hair up to a mountain is all counted the same,
What is a hair and what is a mountain when it is a veil?
تو تا یکبارگی جان درنبازیجنب دانم ترا و نانمازی
Until you completely risk and lose your soul,
I consider you impure and unfit for prayer.
مکاتب را اگر یک جو بماندستبدان جو جاودان در گو بماندست
If a slave buying his freedom owes but one barley grain,
Because of that grain, he remains forever in the pit.
تویی تو ترا نامحرم آمدتو بی تو شو که آدم آن دم آمد
Your 'you-ness' has become a stranger to you;
Become you without yourself, for Adam came at that moment.
اگر آیینه تو همدم تستچو از دم تیره شد نامحرم تست
If your mirror is your intimate companion,
When it is clouded by breath, it becomes a stranger to you.
دو همدم را که با همشان حساب استاگر مویی میان باشد حجاب است
For two companions who are settling accounts with each other,
If there is a hair's breadth between them, it is a veil.
چو بنشیند به خلوت یار با یارنفس نامحرم افتد همچو اغیار
When friend sits in seclusion with Friend,
Breath itself becomes an intruder, like strangers.
ندانی کرد هرگز خلوت آغازمگر از هر چه داری خو کنی باز
You can never begin seclusion with God,
Unless you detach yourself from all that you possess.
نه زان شیر مردان سر راهکه گردد جان تو زین راز آگاه
You are not of those lion-hearted men of the path,
For your soul to become aware of this secret.
علی الجمله یقین بشناس مطلقکه از حق نیست برخوردار جز حق
In short, know this with absolute certainty:
None partakes of the Truth except the Truth.
بگو تا در خور حق یار که بودچو جز حق نیست برخوردار که بود
Tell me, who could be a worthy companion for the Truth?
Since none partakes of the Truth except the Truth!
چو در دریای قدرت قطرهٔ توچو با خورشید حضرت ذرهٔ تو
Since you are but a drop in the ocean of Power,
Since you are but a mote with the sun of the Presence,
چگونه وصل او داری تو امیدچگونه بر توانی شد به خورشید
How can you hope for union with Him?
How can you ascend to the sun?
تو می خواهی بزاری و بزوریکه آید پیل در سوراخ موری
You desire, with weeping and force,
For an elephant to pass through an ant's hole!
برو بنشین که جان از دست برخاستدرآمد هوشیار و مست برخاست
Go and sit down, for the soul has slipped from your grasp;
The sober entered, and rose up intoxicated.
اگر جان است دایم غرقه اوستوگر عقل او برون از حلقه اوست
If there is a soul, it is constantly drowned in Him,
And if it is intellect, it is outside His circle.
هزاران ذره سرگردان بماندستولی خورشید در ایوان بماندست
Thousands of motes remain wandering,
While the sun remains in the grand hall.
درین دریا هزاران قطره پنهانستولی گوهر درون قعر پنهانست
In this sea, thousands of drops are hidden,
But the pearl is hidden deep within the abyss.
بسی در وصف او تصنیف کردندبسی با یکدگر تعریف کردند
Many composed books in His description,
Many defined Him to one another.
هزاران قرن می کردند فکرتبآخر با سرآمد عجز و حیرت
For thousands of centuries, they pondered,
But in the end, it culminated in helplessness and bewilderment.
زهی دریای پر در الهیکه ننشیند برو گرد تباهی
Hail to the Divine sea full of pearls,
Upon which the dust of corruption never settles.
سخن ها می رود چون آب زر پاکولیکن دیده داری تو پر خاک
Words flow as pure as liquid gold,
But your eyes are filled with dust.
دلت با نفس شهوت خوی کردهکجا بیند معانی زیر پرده
Your heart has become accustomed to lustful desires;
How can it see the meanings behind the veil?
چو تو عالم ندانی جز خیالیکجا یابی ازین معنی کمالی
Since you know the world as nothing but a fantasy,
How can you attain perfection from this meaning?
ترا با این چه کار ای خفته باریندارد مشک با کناس کاری
What business do you have with this, O heavy sleeper?
Musk has no business with a latrine sweeper!"
