بشب حلاج را دیدند در خواب
بریده سر بکف با جام جلاب

بدو گفتند چونی سر بریده
بگو تا چیست این جام گزیده

چنین گفت او که سلطان نکونام
بدست سر بریده می دهد جام

کسی این جام معنی می کند نوش
که کردست او سر خود را فراموش

نخستین جسم خود در اسم درباز
پس آنگه جان زبعد اسم درباز

چنان در اسم او کن جسم پنهان
که می گردد الف در بسم پنهان

چو جسمت رفت جان را کن مصفا
برآی ازجان و گم شو در مسما

یکی دریاست زو علم گرفته
همه موجش دل آدم گرفته

کجا این موج دریا می نشیند
که دریا چیست در ما می نشیند

مرا باید که جان و تن بماند
وگر هر دو بماند من نماند

من و تو یک من زهرست در کار
که ز آن یک جو شده کوهی نگوسار

English translation

At night, they saw Hallaj in a dream, His severed head in his hand with a cup of julep. They said to him, 'How are you, O severed head? Tell us, what is this exquisite cup?' He spoke thus, 'The Sultan of good repute Gives the cup into the hand of a severed head. One drinks this cup of inner meaning Who has forgotten his own head. First, sacrifice your body for the Name, Then sacrifice your soul after the Name. Hide your body in His Name so completely That it becomes hidden like the Alif in Bism. When your body is gone, purify your soul; Rise above the soul and become lost in the Named. There is an ocean that has encompassed the world, Its waves have seized the heart of Adam. Where does this wave of the sea settle? For what is the sea that settles within us? I must leave behind both body and soul, For if both remain, the I will not remain. I and you are a maund of poison in this work, From which a single grain turns a mountain upside down.'
