حکیم هند سوی شهر چین شد
به قصر شاه ترکستان زمین شد

شهی می دید طوطی هم نشینش
قفس کرده ز سختی آهنین ش

چو طوطی دید هندو را برابر
زفان بگشاد طوطی همچو شکر

که از بهر خدا ای کار پرداز
اگر روزی به هندستان رسی باز

سلام من به یارانم رسانی
جوابی باز آری گر توانی

بدیشان گوی آن مهجور مانده
ز چشم هم نشینان دور مانده

به زندان و قفس چون سوگوار ی
نه هم دردی مرا ، نه غمگسار ی

چه سازد تا رسد نزد شما باز ؟
چه تدبیر ست ؟ گفتم با شما راز

حکیم آخر چو با هندوستان شد
بر آن طوطیان دلستان شد

هزاران طوطی دل زنده می دید
به گرد شاخه ها پرنده می دید

گرفته هر یکی شکر به منقار
همه در کار و فارغ از همه کار

فلک سر سبز عکس پر ایشان
مگس گشته همای از فر ایشان

حکیم هند آن اسرار برگفت
غم آن طوطی غمخوار بر گفت

چو بشنودند پاسخ نیک بختان
در افتادند یک سر از درختان

چنان از شاخ افتادند بر خاک
که گفتی جان برآمد جمله را پاک

ز حال مرگ ایشان مرد هشیار
عجب ماند و پشیمان شد ز گفتار

به آخر سوی چین چون باز افتاد
سوی آن طوطی آمد راز بگشاد

که یاران از غم تو جان نبردند
همه بر خاک افتادند و مردند

چو طوطی آن سخن بشنید در حال
بزد اندر قفس لختی پر و بال

چو بادی آتشی در خویشتن زد
تو گفتی جان بداد او نیز و تن زد

یکی آمد فریب او بنشناخت
گرفتش پای و اندر گلخن انداخت

چو در گلخن فتاد آن طوطی خوش
ز گلخن بر پرید و شد چو آتش

نشست او بر سر قصر خداوند
حکیم هند را گفت ای هنرمند

مرا تعلیم دادند آن عزیزان
که هم چون برگ شو بر خاک ریزان

طلب کار خلاصی هم چو ما کن
رهایی بایدت ، خود را رها کن

بمیر از خویش تا یابی رهایی
که با مرده نگیرند آشنایی

هر آنگاهی که از خود دست شستی
یقین دان کز همه دامی بجستی

بجای آوردم از یاران خود راز
کنون رفتم بر یاران خود باز

همه یاران من در انتظار م
من بیکار اینجا بر چه کارم ؟!

چو تو مردی به هم جنسان رسیدی
به خلوتگاه علوی آرمیدی

چو مردی زندهٔ جاوید گشتی
خدا را بندهٔ جاوید گشتی

چه خواهی کرد گلخن جای تو نیست
قبای خاک بر بالای تو نیست

عزیزا جهد کن گر راز جویی
که با خود راز خود می بازجویی

برون گیری ز چندین پرده خود را
پدید آری به خاصیت خرد را

چو وقت خواب می آید فراز ت
چرا می دارد از اسرار بازت

به وقت خواب بی خود می بمانی
چگونه همره ت گردد معانی

بدان سان رغبتی داری تو در خواب
که یکسان است با تو آتش و آب

چو راه پنج حس در خواب بستت
چرا ذوقی ندارد جان مستت ؟!

وگر گویی که جان ز آنست بی ذوق
که دارد سوی خود ببریدن شوق

چرا وقت ریاضت جان هشیار
ترا در ذوق می آرد به یک بار

غرض این است ای جویندهٔ راز
که تو خفته نیایی خویش را باز

چو خفتی قطره افتادت به قلزم
شدی در بی خودی یا در خودی گم

به بیداری اگر از خود شوی دور
چو خفتی ، گشتی اندر بیخودی نور

دلت از خود به بیداری نشان یافت
که بیداری به بیداری توان یافت

وگرنه شبنم تاریک روشن
درین دریا بود چون شیر و روغن

یکی کاو شیر او در آب شد خوش
ولی روغن جدا گشت و مشوش

مشو اینجا حلولی ای فضولی
که نبود مرد مستغرق حلولی

English translation

The Indian sage went towards the city of China He went to the palace of the King of the land of Turkestan He saw a king with a parrot as his companion Caged tightly in iron When the parrot saw the Indian before it The parrot opened its sugar-sweet tongue Saying, 'For God's sake, O manager of affairs If you ever reach India again Convey my greetings to my friends And bring back an answer if you can Tell them that this separated one Kept far from the eyes of companions In prison and cage like a mourner With no one to share my pain, no consoler What should he do to reach you again? What is the solution? I have told you my secret' At last, when the sage went to India He approached those captivating parrots He saw thousands of lively parrots Flying around the branches Each holding sugar in its beak All busy and free from all worldly affairs The sky was green from the reflection of their feathers The huma bird became like a fly before their glory The Indian sage recounted those secrets He told of the sorrow of that grieving parrot When those fortunate ones heard the message They all suddenly fell from the trees They fell from the branch to the ground in such a way That you would say their souls had completely departed From their state of death, the wise man Remained astonished and regretted his words Finally, when he returned to China He came to that parrot and revealed the secret Saying, 'Your friends did not survive out of grief for you They all fell to the ground and died' When the parrot heard those words, immediately It beat its wings and feathers a little in the cage Like a wind, it struck fire in itself You would say it gave up its soul too and its body went numb Someone came and did not recognize its trick Took it by the leg and threw it into the ash-pit When that sweet parrot fell into the ash-pit It flew up from the ash-pit and became like fire It sat on top of the master's palace And said to the Indian sage, 'O skillful one Those dear ones taught me To become like leaves falling to the ground Seek liberation just like us If you want freedom, free yourself Die to yourself so you may find freedom Because no one forms attachments with the dead Whenever you wash your hands of yourself Know for certain you have escaped from every trap I understood the secret from my friends Now I am returning to my friends All my friends are waiting for me Why am I sitting idly here?!' When you die (to yourself), you reach your kind You rest in the lofty sanctuary When you die, you become eternally alive You become an eternal servant of God What will you do? The furnace is not your place The garment of earth does not suit your stature Dear one, strive if you seek the secret Because you are seeking your own secret with yourself You must take yourself out of many veils To manifest the intellect in its essence When the time of sleep overtakes you Why does it keep you back from the secrets? At the time of sleep, you remain without self How can spiritual meanings accompany you? You have such an inclination for sleep That fire and water are the same to you Since the path of the five senses is closed to you in sleep Why does your intoxicated soul have no spiritual taste?! And if you say that the soul is without taste for that reason That it has a desire to cut off from itself Why does the conscious soul during asceticism Bring you to a state of spiritual taste all at once? The purpose is this, O seeker of the secret That while asleep, you cannot find yourself When you sleep, your drop falls into the ocean You become lost in selflessness or in the self If in wakefulness you become distant from yourself When you sleep, you become light in selflessness Your heart found a trace of itself in wakefulness Because wakefulness can be found through wakefulness Otherwise, the bright and dark dew In this ocean is like milk and oil One whose milk gladly mixed with water But oil separated and was disturbed Do not become an incarnationist here, O meddler Because the drowned man is not an incarnationist
