Section 6 - The Tale and the Parable
Text and Translation
| A man sat on a vat and curled himself up, Saying, 'I must have silk clothes with a horse and harness.' | |
| They told him, 'Before you can have silk, You must first ask for a shirt of coarse cotton.' | |
| Upon this, the man swore an oath in the vat, Saying, 'I will not abandon my oath in the vat: | |
| Until I see Byzantine silk, I will sit in this vat until I die.' | |
| You too, O heedless man, are just like this, In heedlessness, you seat yourself in a vat. | |
| Come out of the vat! For as long as you sit in it, You are as low as the dust beneath the foot of the spinning sky. | |
| If the heavens were to make a hat for you from the sun, The robe would still be too tight from the sphere's turning. | |
| If you wish for the trembling fever of the heavens, It will not grant it, saying, 'It is our turn.' | |
| From this sea, which is eloquent yet silent, Idols have eyes full of pearls like ears. | |
| Whatever oppression you experience, there is no doubt That it is not even a tenth of what the nine heavens can inflict. | |
| The heavens will overcome you, willy-nilly, Since this bewildered one clashed with it head-to-head. | |
| From my eyes, the earth gathers rubies (tears of blood), Since the sky shoes me (like a horse) at every moment. | |
| From the abundance of blood that flowed from my heart to every eye, My heart drowned in its own blood. | |
| I have no sweeping broom in this busy mill, For I have been trampled by these seven mills (the seven skies). | |
| If someone were to pick up a broom, The grain would be swept away from these seven mills. | |
| The mill-wheel of the sky drove so hard over my head, That my hair was left under the dust of the mill. | |
| With the curved ring of the sky bending my back double, I must endure the pounding of its fist at every moment. | |
| In the battle of the people, the world-burning sun Places this spear on the horse's ear every day. | |
| In this battle, you will see no chapter of peace, Just as you will not find the Water of Life in a salt flat. | |
| I cannot easily explain its nature, For every moment I am cast down by its design. | |
| On this path, O son, what is foot or head? In these seven mills, what matters if it is dry or wet? | |
| If your threshold turned to gold today, Tomorrow, time will toss you out the door. | |
| A treasure of days has opened into your hand, But this treasure of yours is entirely a loan. | |
| If your soul finds a triumph in a lifetime, It will surely deal a kick to your triumph. | |
| The world will smile at you like lightning again, And then, before you, it will shut its lightning away. | |
| Turn your face from this valley of bewilderment, Which has sent the water of regret flowing over your face. | |
| Even if all your affairs turn out right, You must rise from this table hungrier than before. | |
| Since you are an old man, go, do not look behind you, For old age does not look back at anyone. | |
| Since you finally possess neither heart nor brain, Why would you seek an academy from a crow? | |
| When a roof collapses with a single kick, It cannot withstand the chaos and the damage. | |
| Since you lack the endurance to suffer a slap on the neck, Mind your own head, for you have no neck! | |
| Kingship does not befit a beggar, For beggary does not come with drum and banner. | |
| Headless, you have been left behind like a collar, You have no desire for religion, thus you have remained. | |
| Do not act intoxicated with yourself if you are aware, For you have put intoxication into your head. | |
| How long will you remain idle here like a donkey? How long will your halter hang down from your head? | |
| Your body is a trap, your soul is a precious bird; You know neither body nor soul, nor what they truly are. | |
| At the moment of death, lust fell upon you, And you set free the bird you never truly caught. | |
| You piled things up, but nothing remained for you; You took an accounting, but it did not call you back. | |
| Where have you fallen in the end, O Attar? Do not abandon those secrets at last. | |
