به گورستان یکی دیوانه بگریست
بدو گفتند اندر گورها کیست؟

چنین گفت او که مشتی خلق مردار
ولیکن اوفتاده در نمک سار

چو زیر خاک یکسر خاک گردند
نمک گردند و یکسر پاک گردند

ولی گر نبود از ایمان نمکشان
در آتش افکند دور فلکشان

سفر این است و راه این و قرار این
ز خود بگذر که کار این است و بار این

دریغا کاین سفر را دستگه نیست
به تاریکی در افتادیم و ره نیست

یقین می دان که راهی بی کران است
رهی تیره چراغش نور جان است

برو برکش خوشی ناخن ز دنیا
دل و جان را منور کن به عقبی

اگر بی دانش از گیتی شوی دور
بماند چشم جان جاوید بی نور

جهان پاک را چشمی دگر دان
که چشم آنست وین یک سایهٔ آن

اگر خواهی که آن چشمت شود باز
برو جان در کمال دانش انداز

که بعد از مرگ جان مرد دانا
بود بر هرچ رای آرد توانا

چو تن را قوت باید تا فزاید
ز دانش نیز جان را قوت باید

مرو بی دانشی در راه گمراه
که راه دور و تاریک است و پرچاه

چراغ علم و دانش پیش خود دار
وگرنه در چه افتی سرنگونسار

کسی کاو را چراغی مستقیم است
چراغش را ز باد تند بیم است

کسی کاو را چراغ دانشی نیست
یقین دانم که در آسایشی نیست

ز دو چیزت کمال است اندرین راه
فنای محض یا نه جانت آگاه

وگر دانش بود کردار نبود
ترا و دانشت را بار نبود

سخن چون از سر دانش برآید
از آن دل نور آسایش برآید

سخن گر گویی و آهسته گویی
ترا هرگز نیارد زردرویی

حکیمی خوش زبان پاکیزه گفته ست
که در زیر زبان مردم نهفته ست

تو گر داننده باشی و نگویی
نخواهی بندهٔ حق را نکویی

چو یزدان گوهرت داده ست بسیار
به شکر آن زبان را کن گهربار

به دانش کوش گر بینا دلی تو
چرا آخر چنین بی حاصلی تو؟

اگر بر هم نهی صد پارسایی
چو علمت نیست کی یابی رهایی!؟

بود بی علم زاهد سخره ی دیو
قدم در علم زن ای مرد کالیو

English translation

A madman wept in a graveyard They asked him, 'Who is inside the graves?' He said thus, 'A handful of dead people, But they have fallen into a salt-marsh. When beneath the earth they entirely turn to dust, They become salt and are completely purified. But if they lack the salt of faith, The cycle of heaven will cast them into the fire. This is the journey, this is the path, and this is the resting place; Pass beyond yourself, for this is the task and this is the burden. Alas, there are no provisions for this journey; We have fallen into darkness and there is no path. Know for certain that the road is boundless, A dark path whose lamp is the light of the soul. Go, gladly tear your nails away from the world; Illuminate your heart and soul with the hereafter. If you depart from the world without knowledge, The eye of the soul will remain eternally sightless. Consider the pure realm to have another kind of eye, For that is the true eye, and this one is merely its shadow. If you wish for that eye to be opened to you, Go and plunge your soul into the perfection of knowledge. For after death, the soul of a wise man Is capable of whatever it wills to do. Just as the body needs food to grow, The soul also requires nourishment from knowledge. Do not travel aimlessly on the path without knowledge, For the road is long, dark, and full of pits. Hold the lamp of science and knowledge before you, Or else you will fall headlong into a well. Even one whose lamp burns steady and straight, Has fear of the fierce wind for his lamp. One who possesses no lamp of knowledge, I know for certain that he is not in peace. In this path, your perfection lies in two things: Absolute annihilation or an awakened soul. And if there is knowledge but no action, You and your knowledge will bear no fruit. When speech arises from knowledge, The light of comfort emerges from that heart. If you speak, and speak gently, It will never bring you disgrace. A sweet-speaking sage has beautifully said, That a person is hidden beneath their tongue. If you are knowledgeable and do not speak, You do not wish well upon God's servant. Since God has given you many jewels, In gratitude, make your tongue shower jewels. Strive for knowledge if you have an insightful heart; Why, after all, are you so barren of harvest? If you pile up a hundred layers of piety, When you lack knowledge, how will you find deliverance!? An ascetic without knowledge is the mockery of the devil; Step into knowledge, O foolish man!'
