به مسجد در بخفت آن عالم راه
ستاد اندر نماز آن جاهل آنگاه

یکی ابلیس را دید ایستاده
بدو گفتا چه کارست اوفتاده؟

لعین گفتا: همی خواهم هم اکنون
که جاهل را برم از راه بیرون

ولیکن زان ندارم طاقت و تاب
که می ترسم از آن دانای در خواب

گر آن دانا نبودی پای بستم
چو مومی بود آن نادان به دستم

فغان زین صوفی در حلم مانده
ولی در حلم خود بی علم مانده

درین دریای مغرق غوطه باید
نه دام و زرق و دلق و فوطه باید

چو خس بر روی دریا در طوافی
چو غواصی ندانی چند لافی؟

سخن تا چند رانی در نهایت؟
که ماندی بر سر راه بدایت

چرا چندین به گرد کام گردی؟
که اهل درد را بد نام گردی

اگر در راه دین گردیت بودی
ز نامردی خود دردیت بودی

هر آنکس را که درد کار بگرفت
همه جان و دلش دلدار بگرفت

اگر هرگز بگیرد درد دینت
شود علم الیقین عین الیقینت

به درد آید درین ره هر که مردست
که کاوین عروس خلد دردست

سخن کان از سر دردی درآید
کسی کان بشنود مردی برآید

سخن کز علم گویی راست آنست
مرا از اهل دل درخواست آنست

وگر علم لدنی داری ای دوست
بود علم تو مغز و علم ما پوست

چو علمت هست در علمت عمل کن
پس از علم و عمل اسرار حل کن

شتر مرغی که وقت کار کردن
چو مرغی و چو اشتر وقت خوردن

ترا با علم دین کاری بباید
به قدر علم کرداری بباید

ترا در علم دین یک ذره کردار
بسی زان به که علم دین به خروار

برو کاری بکن کاین کار خامست
که علم دین ترا حرفی تمامست

کسی کاو داند و کارش نبندد
بر او بگری که او بر خویش خندد

English translation

That scholar of the path fell asleep in the mosque While that ignorant man stood up in prayer at that moment Someone saw Iblis standing there And asked him, 'What business brings you here?' The accursed one replied: 'I desire right now To lead that ignorant man astray from the path But I do not have the power and endurance for it Because I am afraid of that wise man in his sleep If that wise man were not binding my feet That ignorant man would be like wax in my hands.' Alas for this Sufi stuck in forbearance Yet remaining without knowledge in his forbearance In this drowning sea, one must dive Neither traps, hypocrisy, cloaks, nor turbans are needed Like a weed on the surface of the sea you circle Since you do not know diving, how long will you boast? How long will you speak of the ultimate end? For you have remained at the beginning of the path Why do you circle so much around desires? So that you bring a bad name to the people of pain If you had any dust from the path of religion You would have some pain from your own unmanliness Whoever is gripped by the pain of the Work His entire heart and soul is seized by the Beloved If the pain of religion ever seizes you Your knowledge of certainty will become the essence of certainty Whoever is a man in this path comes with pain For the dowry of the bride of eternity is pain Speech that comes from the origin of pain Whoever hears it, emerges as a man The speech you utter from knowledge, the truth is that My request from the people of the heart is that And if you possess divine knowledge, O friend, Your knowledge is the kernel and our knowledge is the shell Since you have knowledge, act upon your knowledge After knowledge and action, solve the secrets You are an ostrich which, when it's time to work Are like a bird, and like a camel when it's time to eat You need to have some engagement with the knowledge of religion You need to have action in proportion to your knowledge A single atom of action in the knowledge of religion for you Is much better than a donkey-load of religious knowledge Go and do some work, for this affair is raw For the knowledge of religion is a complete word for you Whoever knows and does not apply his knowledge in practice Weep for him, for he laughs at himself
