توکل کرده ای کار اوفتادهبه جای آورد چل حج پیاده
A distressed man who had placed his trust in God,
Performed forty pilgrimages (Hajj) on foot.
مگر در حج آخر با خبر بودگذر کردش بخاطر این خطر زود
Perhaps during the final pilgrimage he had a realization,
And this perilous thought quickly crossed his mind:
که چل حج پیاده کرده ام منبه انصافی بسی خون خورده ام من
'I have performed forty pilgrimages on foot,
In fairness, I have endured much suffering.'
چو دید آن عجب در خود مرد برخاستمنادی کرد در مکه چپ و راست
When the man saw this conceit in himself, he arose,
And called out in Mecca, to the left and right:
که چل حج پیاده این ستمکاربه نانی می فروشد کو خریدار ؟!
'This oppressor has done forty pilgrimages on foot,
He sells them for a loaf of bread! Where is a buyer?!'
فروخت آخر به نانی و به سگ دادیکی پیر از پسش در رفت چون باد
He finally sold them for a loaf of bread and gave it to a dog.
An old man followed him swiftly like the wind,
زدش محکم قفایی و بدو گفتکه ای خر این زمان چون خر فرو خفت
Struck him hard on the back of the neck and said:
'O donkey! At this time you have lain down like a donkey.
تو گر چل حج به نانی می فروشیقوی می آیدت چندین چه جوشی
If you sell forty pilgrimages for a single loaf of bread,
Does it seem like a great deal to you? Why so much clamor?
که آدم هشت جنت جمله پر نوربه دو گندم بداد از پیش من دور
For Adam gave away eight heavens, all entirely full of light,
For two grains of wheat; get away from me!
نگه کن ای ز نامردی مراییکه تا مردان کجا و تو کجایی
Look, O hypocrite, acting out of weakness,
Where the true men stand, and where you are!
تو گویی من بگویم ترک این کارولی وقتی که وقت آید پدیدار
You might say, 'I will abandon this effort,'
But when the true time comes to light:
گر اکنون ترک کار خویش گیرمبسی بی برگی اندر پیش گیرم
'If I now abandon my work,
I will be left utterly destitute.'
نمی گویم که ترک کار خود کنولیکن هم نمی گویم که بد کن
I do not say to abandon your work,
But neither do I say you should act badly.
بجز وی این زمان تخمی نکو کارکه تا آنگه که کل گردی نکوکار
Right now, sow a good seed other than this,
So that you may eventually become fully righteous.
تو هر طاعت که این ساعت توانیبجای آور کزین هم باز مانی
Whatever act of obedience you can do at this moment,
Perform it, for you may be deprived even of this.'
