توکل کرده ای کار اوفتاده
به جای آورد چل حج پیاده

مگر در حج آخر با خبر بود
گذر کردش بخاطر این خطر زود

که چل حج پیاده کرده ام من
به انصافی بسی خون خورده ام من

چو دید آن عجب در خود مرد برخاست
منادی کرد در مکه چپ و راست

که چل حج پیاده این ستمکار
به نانی می فروشد کو خریدار ؟!

فروخت آخر به نانی و به سگ داد
یکی پیر از پسش در رفت چون باد

زدش محکم قفایی و بدو گفت
که ای خر این زمان چون خر فرو خفت

تو گر چل حج به نانی می فروشی
قوی می آیدت چندین چه جوشی

که آدم هشت جنت جمله پر نور
به دو گندم بداد از پیش من دور

نگه کن ای ز نامردی مرایی
که تا مردان کجا و تو کجایی

تو گویی من بگویم ترک این کار
ولی وقتی که وقت آید پدیدار

گر اکنون ترک کار خویش گیرم
بسی بی برگی اندر پیش گیرم

نمی گویم که ترک کار خود کن
ولیکن هم نمی گویم که بد کن

بجز وی این زمان تخمی نکو کار
که تا آنگه که کل گردی نکوکار

تو هر طاعت که این ساعت توانی
بجای آور کزین هم باز مانی

English translation

A distressed man who had placed his trust in God, Performed forty pilgrimages (Hajj) on foot. Perhaps during the final pilgrimage he had a realization, And this perilous thought quickly crossed his mind: 'I have performed forty pilgrimages on foot, In fairness, I have endured much suffering.' When the man saw this conceit in himself, he arose, And called out in Mecca, to the left and right: 'This oppressor has done forty pilgrimages on foot, He sells them for a loaf of bread! Where is a buyer?!' He finally sold them for a loaf of bread and gave it to a dog. An old man followed him swiftly like the wind, Struck him hard on the back of the neck and said: 'O donkey! At this time you have lain down like a donkey. If you sell forty pilgrimages for a single loaf of bread, Does it seem like a great deal to you? Why so much clamor? For Adam gave away eight heavens, all entirely full of light, For two grains of wheat; get away from me! Look, O hypocrite, acting out of weakness, Where the true men stand, and where you are! You might say, 'I will abandon this effort,' But when the true time comes to light: 'If I now abandon my work, I will be left utterly destitute.' I do not say to abandon your work, But neither do I say you should act badly. Right now, sow a good seed other than this, So that you may eventually become fully righteous. Whatever act of obedience you can do at this moment, Perform it, for you may be deprived even of this.'
