The Allegory of the Dust Fortress and True Kingship in Rumi's Masnavi
In Book Four, Section 118 of the Masnavi, Rumi presents the story of a spiritually awakened prince to illustrate the contrast between worldly ambition and divine wisdom. Rumi compares earthly kingship and political power struggles to children fighting over a mound of dust; the victor proudly claims a 'fortress' that is ultimately nothing more than dirt. The prince, having been freed from the 'fetters of colors' (material illusions), recognizes that worldly treasures like gold and brocade are merely colored dust. By referencing the Quranic verse 'We gave him wisdom as a child' (Quran 19:12), Rumi emphasizes that true spiritual maturity and divine guidance transcend age and render earthly dominion entirely meaningless.
