In this tale from the Mosibat Nameh, Attar uses the story of an effeminate man (mukhannath) fleeing in terror from a snake to illustrate the futility of outward pretense. Although one might attempt to project the strength of Rostam or carry a noble name, an inherent lack of spiritual fortitude and courage is inevitably exposed under trial. The allegory teaches that true spiritual commitment and character cannot be simulated through external designations or superficial bravado.
