The Allegory of the Hoopoe as the Messenger of Love in Khosrow Nameh
In Section 58 of Farid al-Din Attar's Khosrow Nameh, the poet invokes the hoopoe (hudhud)—the traditional avian messenger between Prophet Solomon and the Queen of Sheba (Bilqis)—as an allegory for the messenger of divine love (ishq). Attar exhorts the bird to renounce worldly status ('lay down the crown') and embrace its higher spiritual calling. By comparing the hoopoe's journey to Sheba to the cosmic messenger Gabriel, the poem illustrates how the seeker or the poet's voice must act as a trustworthy channel, carrying the message of love to refresh the world and fill the heavens with spiritual resonance.
