This Sufi allegory in Attar's Mosibat Nameh describes a lover who weeps blood out of fear of the Day of Resurrection. The lover does not fear divine punishment; rather, he dreads the moment after the direct vision of God when he will be returned to his own self-awareness (khwish). In Persian Sufism, individual consciousness is viewed as a state of separation from the Divine, whereas selflessness (bi-khodi) and annihilation (fana) are seen as the ultimate state of union with God.
