Section 7 - The Tale and the Parable

Original content

English translation

A lover, one day, was weeping tears of blood, Someone asked him, 'What is this crying for?' He said, 'They say tomorrow the Creator, When He makes the honor of His vision manifest, Will grant for forty thousand continuous years A public audience to the elect of His proximity. For one moment they will return to themselves from there, They will fall into need, having been accustomed to grace. I weep for that reason: that they might leave me to myself, And for one breath place me in my own sight. What will I do for that one breath with myself? I could kill myself from this sorrow! I am with God when I see myself as selfless, As long as I see myself with a self, I see poorly. That time when I have liberation from myself, Selflessness will be the essence of godliness for me. Whoever brings a hair's breadth of self into the middle, Will remain a hair's breadth away from the clear vision. A man must be effaced in both worlds, Foot invisible from head, and head from foot. If there were a hair's breadth of differentiation, His entire being from head to foot would be an idol.'
