The Allegory of the Madman and the Grieving Earth in Asrar Nameh
In this section of Farid al-Din Attar's 'Asrar Nameh', the archetype of the wise madman (divaneh) is used to deliver a profound reflection on mortality. When asked about God's work, the madman points to the dust of the earth, describing it as grieving and weeping for the countless lives it has swallowed. Every particle of dust laments the relentless cycle of life and death. Through this stark allegory, Attar personifies the earth to emphasize the transience of worldly existence, warning the spiritually oblivious that they too will soon inevitably return to the dust.
