In Attar's Mosibat Nameh, the allegory of the madman who fills a skull with dust illustrates the futility of human pride and the inevitability of death. By putting dust into the skull to force out the wind of pride, the madman teaches that worldly status and arrogance are ultimately extinguished in the face of annihilation (fana), leaving nothing but dust.
