This allegory illustrates the Sufi principle of non-attachment (tark) as a source of spiritual security. During a time of crisis where others hide their wealth in fear, the madman waves a tattered rag to demonstrate that having nothing provides a unique immunity to worldly loss. The story teaches that material possessions are 'bonds of the soul' (band-e jan), and only through total renunciation can one escape the 'helplessness' (bicharagi) of worldly existence.
