The Allegory of the Madman, the King, and the Love of Gold in Asrar Nameh
In Farid al-Din Attar's Asrar Nameh, the allegory of the madman and the king explores the paradox of material attachment. A madman asks a king whether he prefers gold or sin. When the king admits his love for gold, the madman points out a fundamental irony: at death, humans leave behind the worldly wealth they so deeply loved, yet they carry into the afterlife the spiritual burdens (sins) they accumulated. This narrative serves as a stark reminder of the futility of hoarding worldly possessions and emphasizes that spiritual consequences outlast physical wealth.
