The Allegory of the Madman's Stolen Turban in Asrar Nameh
In this section of Attar's Asrar Nameh, a madman travels to the Kaaba upon hearing it is a sanctuary of absolute safety. However, his turban is immediately stolen at the threshold. Rather than being distressed, the madman reflects that if a turban is taken at the door, the head itself will surely not remain intact inside. This serves as an allegory for the Sufi concept of self-annihilation (fana). It teaches that true spiritual safety in the divine presence does not mean the preservation of material possessions or the ego, but rather demands the total surrender and dissolution of the self.
