The Allegory of the Mice and the Egg in Asrar Nameh

In this section of Attar's Asrar Nameh, the poet recounts a fable about a mouse that discovers a bird's egg but is unable to carry it because of its size and smooth surface. To solve this, the mouse devises a clever trick and enlists a second mouse. The second mouse lies on its back, clutching the egg tightly to its chest, while the first mouse drags its companion by the tail back to their hole. In the broader context of Sufi literature, such fables of animal cunning often serve as allegories for the elaborate and sometimes absurd stratagems the lower soul (nafs) employs to secure worldly and material desires.
