The Allegory of the Misplaced Invocation during Ablution in the Masnavi

In Book 4 of the Masnavi (Sections 84 and 85), Rumi explores the relationship between outward rituals and inward spiritual realities through the comedic allegory of a man performing ablution (wudu). Section 84 establishes the proper invocations for each limb, emphasizing that each physical act corresponds to a specific spiritual petition—such as seeking the scent of Paradise when drawing water into the nose. Section 85 immediately follows with a foolish man who recites the prayer for the nose while washing his rear. Through this absurdity, Rumi critiques superficial religious observance devoid of discernment, highlighting that spiritual practices and prayers must be properly aligned with their divine context to be effective.
