The Allegory of the Mouse and the Camel in Asrar Nameh
In this section of Attar's Asrar Nameh, the poet recounts a fable about an arrogant mouse who takes hold of a camel's halter. Because the camel docilely follows, the mouse becomes inflated with false pride, believing itself to be a powerful leader. This delusion is shattered when the mouse attempts to lead the camel into its tiny mouse hole, and the camel mocks the mouse's absurdity. This narrative serves as an allegory for the arrogance and ignorance of the lower ego (nafs), which constantly overestimates its own capacity. Attar's telling of this story stands as a foundational text that later inspired Rumi's famous adaptation of the same fable in the Masnavi.
